How to Increase a Business Line of Credit Limit

Your business line of credit limit was set when your company was smaller, and now a single large order or a slow-paying customer can push you to the ceiling in a week.

Your business line of credit limit was set when your company was smaller, and now a single large order or a slow-paying customer can push you to the ceiling in a week. You need more room, but you also know that asking at the wrong moment can get you a polite no, or worse, a fresh review that ends with a lower limit than the one you started with.

I spent eleven years underwriting commercial credit, and most limit increase requests I declined were not from weak businesses. They were from decent businesses that asked badly: wrong timing, thin paperwork, and a number pulled out of the air. This guide covers how lenders size a business line of credit limit, what they want to see before they raise it, and how to put a request together that a credit officer can approve without a second meeting.

How lenders size a business line of credit limit

Almost every lender starts from one of two formulas, and knowing which one your bank uses tells you where the ceiling really is.

The first is a revenue multiple. Many banks and online lenders cap an unsecured line at roughly 10 to 15 percent of annual revenue. A business doing $800,000 a year would typically sit somewhere between $80,000 and $120,000. If you are already at $100,000 on that revenue, asking for $250,000 is not a negotiation, it is a different product.

The second is a borrowing base. Secured lines are often tied to collateral, most commonly receivables under 90 days old at 75 to 85 percent and eligible inventory at 25 to 50 percent. If your receivables have grown from $150,000 to $260,000 since the line was opened, the math supports a higher limit almost on its own.

Both formulas sit on top of a cash flow test. The underwriter wants to know that your business can carry the interest on a fully drawn line, plus your other debt payments, with room to spare. That is where the debt service coverage ratio lenders use comes in, and most banks want it at 1.25 or higher after the new limit is assumed fully drawn.

Signs you are ready to ask for an increase

A request goes well when the numbers have already moved in your favour. Before you call your banker, check these five points.

  • Revenue is up at least 20 percent since the line was approved, and the growth shows on your bank statements, not only in a projection.
  • You have used the line and paid it down at least twice in the past 12 months. Lenders like seeing the balance move up and come back down.
  • No late payments on the line, your business cards, or your personal credit in the past 24 months.
  • Your utilization has run between 30 and 70 percent, which shows real need without signalling that you live at the limit.
  • Your last tax return is filed and matches the internal financials you will hand over.

If two or more of these are missing, wait a quarter and fix them. A declined request leaves a note in your file that the next underwriter will read.

The timing that works best

The cleanest moment is at or just before your annual renewal review, because the lender is already pulling your financials and rerunning the numbers. Asking mid-year is fine too, ideally 30 to 45 days after a strong quarter closes so the results are fresh. Avoid asking right after a month where you sat at 95 percent utilization or bounced a payment from the operating account.

Building the request package

Most owners send a short email that says "we would like a higher limit." That forces the underwriter to do all the work, and busy credit officers default to caution. A good package answers their questions before they ask.

  1. A one-page cover letter stating the amount you want, why, and how it will be repaid. Name a specific use, such as funding a $90,000 contract with 60-day payment terms.
  2. Two years of business tax returns and year-to-date profit and loss and balance sheet statements, dated within the last 60 days.
  3. An accounts receivable aging report, especially if your line is secured or you want it to become secured.
  4. A current debt schedule listing every loan, lease and card with balances and monthly payments.
  5. Three to six months of bank statements if your lender is not the bank that holds your operating account.

On the amount: ask for a number you can justify with a formula. If your revenue is $1.2 million and your current limit is $75,000, requesting $150,000 sits at 12.5 percent of revenue and is easy to defend. Requesting $400,000 is not.

Why asking for more than you need is bad advice

A common tip on founder forums is to ask for double what you want so the bank can "meet you in the middle." That rarely works with commercial credit, and here is why.

Underwriters do not haggle. They run the request through a model with the full amount assumed drawn. If the debt service coverage ratio drops below the bank's floor at the inflated number, the request is declined outright, not trimmed. I saw many files where the owner would have been approved for $50,000 more but was turned down because they asked for $200,000 more.

There is a second cost. Some lenders charge an unused line fee of 0.25 to 0.50 percent a year on the undrawn balance. A $300,000 line that you mostly leave idle could cost $750 to $1,500 a year for nothing. Ask for what your cash cycle actually needs, plus a cushion of about 20 percent.

What happens after you submit

For a bank line under $250,000, expect two to four weeks. Online lenders often decide in two to five business days, and some raise limits automatically after six months of on-time payments. Larger requests may trigger a site visit or a field exam of your receivables.

Be ready for conditions. A lender may approve the increase but add a covenant, such as a minimum debt service coverage ratio tested yearly, or require a 30-day period each year where the balance is at zero. If that requirement shows up, read up on how to pass a line of credit clean-up period before you sign, because failing it can freeze the whole line.

If you are declined, ask for the reason in writing. Lenders usually say exactly what fell short, whether coverage, time in business, or credit. That note becomes your checklist for the next request in six months.

Frequently asked questions

Does asking for a business line of credit increase hurt my credit score?

It can. Many lenders run a hard inquiry on the personal guarantor, which may drop a personal score by a few points for up to 12 months. Ask your lender whether it uses a soft or hard pull before you apply, and avoid stacking several requests in the same month.

How often can I request a higher limit on a business line of credit?

Most lenders consider a new request every six to 12 months. Asking more often without a material change in revenue or collateral usually leads to a quick decline. Use the time between requests to build a payment history and grow the numbers the lender measures.

Can a lender lower my limit after I ask for an increase?

Yes, because a request triggers a fresh review of your financials. If revenue has dropped or your debt load has grown, the new numbers may support a smaller line than you have today. That is why you should only ask after a strong quarter with clean statements.
